Year 10

Students in Year 10 begin to focus on life and learning beyond formal schooling. While strong emphasis is placed on preparation for further studies, students are encouraged to pursue courses of study they are both good at and enjoy; this enables students to achieve their best. A significant feature of the Ballarat Grammar curriculum is the opportunity for some students to begin their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) studies in Year 10

Students participate in core teaching and learning experiences in the following:

English, Mathematics, General Science

Society and You (a course in Civics and Citizenship)

Physical Education, Beliefs and Values

Elective choices are very broad and cater for a diverse range of interests and skills, for example:

Colonial History, Small Business Practice, Drama

Visual Communication and Design, Electronic Publications,
Debating and Oratory, French, Chinese, Latin, Geography

Some students are eligible to commence VCE studies in English, General Mathematics, VET Agriculture and Art; this process is commenced in consultation with the class teacher and relevant Head of Department.

Year 10 also participate in the Outdoor Education program as part of the compulsory curriculum

VCE

In Year 11 and 12, students complete the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) in which a wide range of different studies is offered. At this stage of their schooling pupils find that their abilities, interests and career needs take them in very different directions. Ballarat Grammar aims to provide academic programs that will suit all pupils, whatever their abilities, interests and needs.

Ballarat Grammar is committed to providing a broad and comprehensive curriculum at the VCE level. The School provides one of the most comprehensive range of subject choices in non-metropolitan Victoria; in 2002, the School presented candidates in 38 VCE subjects as diverse as Renaissance History, Music Industry Skills, Chemistry, Psychology, Accounting, Health and Human Development, English Literature, and Further Mathematics. The School is also one of the pilot schools implementing the CAS-CAT Mathematics course in conjunction with the University of Melbourne, while other students are completing Mathematics Enhancement Studies through Monash University

A special feature of the VCE curriculum at Ballarat Grammar is the opportunity for some students to commence their VCE studies in Year 10. Many students in Year 11 also present for examination in subjects at Unit 3 and 4 levels. These opportunities enhance student learning experiences for many of our VCE students.
