A rich music program enhances the life of everyone at Ballarat Grammar, both participants and observers.
The School believes music belongs to everybody and music education is not a privilege but a right.
Music School
Grammar students learn classical
and contemporary music from more than twenty five specialist classroom and instrumental
teachers, with a choice of over twenty instruments. Students are stimulated and
entertained, challenged and inspired by a variety of artists, professional groups,
and musicians-in-residence who regularly perform and conduct master classes and
workshops. The Music School regularly undertakes a range of local, regional and
overseas tours, and performances.
Students have the opportunity to perform at a wide range of functions including assemblies, Chapel services, annual concerts, Presentation Evening, competitions, eisteddfods, festivals and community events. Inter House Choral Competitions encourage students to collaborate and perform.
Ensembles and bands include
Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Senior and Junior Choirs, String Orchestra, Concert Band,
Stage Band, Symphonic Band, Training Band, Training Strings, String Quartet, Sultans
of Swing, Jazz Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, WOMP (Weapons of Mass
Percussion), Flute Quartet, Flauti Fantastica and Flauto Dolce (Recorder), Pipes
and Drums, and Harp Ensemble. Many students form their own ensembles and practise
regularly in our well-equipped Music facilities within the state-of-the art Wendouree
Performing Arts Centre and the Beckworth Centre. Facilities include a recording
studio, sound booth, practice studios and composition laboratory.
The School believes that the
practice of Music engages the imagination, fosters flexible ways of thinking, develops
disciplined efforts and builds self-confidence. Our dynamic and diverse music program
offers a multitude of musical and choral opportunities. Classroom Music is an essential
component of the curriculum from the ELC to Year 7. Students are introduced to the
recorder and undertake tuition on violin, viola or cello in the Year 2 String program.
Music is compulsory at Year 7, providing students with the opportunity to play a
string, woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. Students in Years 8 to 10 explore
technology in music, film music, composition and performance. In Years 10, 11 and
12, the VCE subjects of Solo Performance and Music Styles are offered, as well as
VET Music Industry Skills Certificates II and III.
Music Scholarships and bursaries are offered in February of each year to instrumentalists and singers and can be applied for through the Director of Admissions on 03 5338 0830.
