Music Scholarships

Ensemble Music Scholarship auditions and interviews, for students entering Years 5 to 11 in 2011, will be held on Saturday, 27 February 2010.

Scholarships are available on all instruments, including Voice, and provide 15%, 25% or 50% of tuition fees, through to the end of Year 12. The scholarship will also provide one half-hour lesson per week, on one instrument, to a maximum of 9 lessons per term, provided by a teacher at the School.

A minimum standard applies to most instruments. Pianists should be at least 5th Grade. All other applicants should have no less than three years experience, or provide a reference of recommendation from their instrumental teacher. More than one instrument may be presented at the audition.

Musical opportunities are provided through various orchestras, concert bands, classical and contemporary ensembles, choirs and chamber groups. For more information refer to the Music page on the website.

Student playing harp Successful candidates will be expected to participate in at least two ensembles, as directed by the Head of Music. Pianists/organists may be involved as accompanists or percussionists in the orchestras and/or concert bands and/or sing in one or more of the School choirs.

At the audition/interview, applicants will be expected to present some technical work (scales and exercises) and two contrasting pieces. There will be basic tests for aural and theoretical skills, and unprepared performance (sight-reading) may occur.

It is preferred that students undertaking an audition have suitable accompaniment, (in the form of either piano accompaniment or CD backing). The School Accompanist is available, by request, for wind instruments and voice. A named copy of your music must be submitted with the Application Form.

Candidates will be notified of their audition time by phone or email in the week prior to the auditions.
An Entry Fee of $75 made payable to Ballarat Grammar, should be enclosed with your application form. Candidates who are also entering for an Academic Scholarship will not be required to pay a Music Scholarship Entry Fee.

Please call the School on 5338 0830 or email admissions@bgs.vic.edu.au to obtain an Application Form for a Music Scholarship.
