Parents' and Friends' Network October Meeting
Our next meeting will be held in the Kinsman Wing Staff Centre, Wednesday 7th October 2009, at 7:30pm. Christine Shaw, Assistant Head: Wellbeing, will discuss Positive Education and its links to adolescent wellbeing.
Positive Education is based on well researched Positive Psychology, which is founded in the belief that we all have the capacity to thrive if we focus on positive emotions, positive individual traits and positive institutions. That rather than working to undo problems, we look at our strengths and weaknesses and the environment we create to prevent them.

Third Service Trip to Awala Village PNG
Families in Awala Village in the PNG highlands will again welcome Ballarat Grammar students and staff into their homes during the July semester break for the third service trip run by the school. Awala is a remote developing village in PNG where most families are subsistence farmers. They have no running water, no sewerage, no electricity and very limited access to basic commodities.
Previous service trips in 2007 and 2008 have been an adventure for Year 8 students and staff; they worked hard at the Awala Primary School to repair blackboards, build desks, construct a double classroom and catalogue books in the Library. Preparation for the service trip involved raising funds for the building projects and for a young boy from the village who required major facial surgery.
The touring party of twelve Year 8 students and five staff depart this Friday 19th June for the two week service project which involves students undertaking repair and maintenance of a teacher residence at the school.
The service trip is also a life-changing adventure for the students as they benefit from new friendships, develop tolerance, resilience and international understanding through a structured service project.
Upon return from the 2008 service trip, Emily Howson commented: "I met the nicest people in the whole world over there and I will never forget them I am definitely going back over! I already miss them; seeing them smile and hearing them laugh. It was the best experience of my life."
Year 8 students have boundless enthusiasm, optimism and willingness to engage in all aspects of the service trip and this makes them ideal participants in such a significant project.
Ballarat Grammar students and staff are billeted to host families and live the life of villagers. Whilst being active in the service project, the students attend the local school and participate in the cultural activities of the village.
As a member of the International Round Square, all Ballarat Grammar students are required to embrace community service as a valuable part of learning to become global citizens.
The success of the relationship with Awala village sees the commencement of a program in 2010 whereby two Yr 8 students from Awala will repeat Year 8 at Ballarat Grammar prior to attending Martyrs’ Memorial School in PNG to commence Year 9. This will give the students an opportunity to advance their education in readiness for their High School years back in PNG.
Ms Bronwyn Heath, the co-ordinator of the service trip, welcomes any financial donations from the Ballarat community which would be directly passed on to the Awala School community to purchase resources needed in the day-to-day running of the school. Bronwyn can be contacted at Ballarat Grammar on +61 3 5338 0839 or bronwyn.heath@bgs.vic.edu.au
