UN Model Convention Report

While Ballarat Grammar is not alone in confronting Climate Change, the Term 3 Model UN Conference, held for Year 10 students, showed the best of grassroots passion and leadership.

Hosted by Zoe Phillips, Program Manager of United Nations Association of Australia (Victorian Division), the delegates were addressed by Ian Rossiter, City of Ballarat, Sustainability Division, and Peter Gell, Professor of Environmental Science, University of Ballarat.

Working in teams, students were active in debate, representing countries from the largest through to the smallest. Co-operating wherever possible in both geo-political and economic blocs, students attempted to negotiate mutually agreeable resolutions, bringing to life the reality of the UN General Assembly.

Amendments to resolutions were discussed and the day was a huge success, no less because of the wider participation of some Year 12 students, representing Taiwan, who arrived to make a spontaneous contribution!

Thanks must go to all the teaching staff and students at Ballarat Grammar who directly engaged, participated and encouraged the spirit of the UN and sustainability of the environment.

Our future is bright if not "cool", if the promise of this cohort is realised and the ideas and energy shown throughout this Conference is galvanised into firm action.

Ballarat Grammar says farewell

Rob hard at work. (click here for larger image if available).

Following 13 years as Director of Admissions, Mr Rob Olston has decided to relinquish this position at the end of 2008.

Not coincidentally, this period of time has seen enormous growth in both day and boarding student enrolments, through nationally recognised best practice based on personal warmth.

The entire School community acknowledges the energy and passion that Rob has brought to this role, and our sincere appreciation goes to him.
