Michelle Donaldson, Queen’s Baton Bearer
4 April 2018—
As we launch into the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games tonight, did you know we have a Queen’s Baton bearer in our midst?
Michelle Donaldson is a Year 12 student, National Champion Dragon Boater, won Young Carers Award Ballarat in 2016, has been involved in innumerable community service activities through her years as a Girl Guide and was nominated and selected to carry the baton during the Ballarat leg. We also had canteen staff member Monique Ford carry the Baton for the role she plays in the community. A huge congratulations to both of you.
A little more about Michelle:
For two years, Michelle has been peer-selected to captain the Victorian State Junior Dragon Boating Team, and will compete in the Australian Under-18 team later this year in France.
Michelle had a very successful time at the recent National Dragon Boat Championships held in Queensland in March. She was part of the crew that won gold in the Open standards (20’s crew) – a men’s crew which allows up to four women. Michelle was one of two girls chosen to be in the boat.
Other great medal results for Michelle:
State vs State Michelle received two bronze medals: one in mixed and one in women’s small boat (10’s crew), and silver in 100m relay small boat (10’s crew).
Club vs club Michelle received a silver in the women’s 500m, bronze in the mixed standards (20’s crew), silver in 200m women’s and silver in mixed 200m small boat (10’s crew). Michelle also won a silver medal in the 2000 women’s.
Michelle had the privilege to be the lead stroke in one of the 2k races as well as a 200m race.
Michelle’s commitment requires her to travel to Melbourne each weekend during the training and competition season, sometimes twice over the weekend, to participate in training and competition.
Well done on your hard work, dedication and success Michelle!
