Boarding Life at Grammar
Your boarding experience here will be filled with rich experiences, special friendships and wonderful moments that will stay with you forever.
You will have every opportunity to experience the rich and diverse programs on offer at Grammar. You will learn about living with others from a wide variety of backgrounds – with this will come independence, confidence and social skills that you will carry with you throughout your life. We want you to develop a lifelong love of learning, to nurture enduring friendships and to understand the importance of community and your role in it.
Our Boarding Community
Our close community is vibrant, diverse and considerate. We are very proud of the strong sense of community we nurture within the boarding houses and of the value system and the trust that we’ve worked so hard to establish.
Boarders are the heart and soul of our community
Our boarders are typically happy young people from great families who are keen to get involved. Boarders have a strong presence in the school overall and make a vital contribution to leadership and to all parts of school life. The strong country values of Grammar boarding families are reflected in the open and friendly nature of our boarders.
We have around 215 girls and boys from Years 7 to 12 from all over Australia as well as a small number from overseas with the majority coming from regional and rural areas in western and northern Victoria and southern New South Wales. Our boarders and their families love how they feel welcomed at Grammar and are extremely proud of their connection with the School – a feeling that continues long after they leave.
Tradition, House Spirit and Family Events
Since the early days of the School, boarding has been a central part of life at Ballarat Grammar. Our boarders are fierce guardians of the rich history, tradition and ‘spirit’ of their Houses. They love to show off their home away from home and welcome members of their extended families to special boarding events like Grandparent’s Day, Mother-Daughter and Father-Son Weekends and House Dinners.
Living on Campus
Our boarding community of students and staff families lives in a beautiful and spacious setting on our main campus in Wendouree. Boarders have immediate access to the School’s wonderful and extensive facilities and teaching staff as well as many opportunities off campus.
Sundays are Special
The Chapel of Saint Mark and the Dining Hall are at the heart of boarding at Grammar. One of our favourite times of the week is ‘the Sunday Roast’ – a good old-fashioned meal where we all slow down and enjoy the art of conversation during this hour-long meal. The Sunday Roast is an occasion that is fondly remembered by many generations of Grammar boarders. Following the meal boarders attend the weekly Boarder Chapel Service.
We’re extremely proud of the kind of young adults they are developing into.
Living on campus, boarders can make the most of every opportunity during their time at Grammar. Each boarder is encouraged to engage in all aspects of school life – from the arts to sport, service, debating, agriculture and many more. There is also a dedicated sports and activities program for boarders.
Grammar also offers a very wide range of academic subjects – as well as those you’d expect there are some you might not expect such as VCE Agriculture and Horticultural Studies, Systems Technology, Design and Technology (where students make commercial grade products) and Environmental Science.
Boarders are encouraged to immerse themselves fully in boarding life and other opportunities on the weekends and after school. We have a vibrant weekend activities program which includes things like day visits to the beach and sporting events in Melbourne, service activities such as flood relief help, bike rides, surfing, movie nights, cooking etc.
As well as having easy access to our structured Co-Curricular Program, during their recreational time boarders have easy access to the extensive facilities on campus – under supervision – such as the 25m indoor pool, the weights gym and the games gym as well as the spacious grounds. Beautiful Lake Wendouree is only a 10-minute walk away and offers a wide range of recreational options from running or walking to just relaxing.
The School’s 50ha (125 acre) farm campus at Mount Rowan is located just three kilometres north of the main campus and offers boarders activities working with sheep, cattle and horses and with cropping and environmental enterprises. The School has an enviable track record of highly successful results in VCE Agriculture and Horticulture.
We are committed to supporting outstanding young people from the regional and rural communities across Australia. We welcome interest from students who demonstrate the qualities, potential and leadership to make a significant contribution to the School in the broadest sense and to our Boarding Program specifically. The Headmaster and Senior Staff regularly visit Field Days and country areas to meet informally with parents. We also warmly encourage you to visit the School and see for yourself what’s special about Grammar. Find out about our Tours and Open Days.
