Oscar Shines on World Stage
Oscar Wootton (2024) has capped off an outstanding season, delivering two phenomenal performances against a world-class field at the recent World Triathlon Junior/U23 Championships in Wollongong, including securing a team medal for Australia.
In the Australian Men Junior World Championships race, Oscar led the national charge, to finish an amazing ninth overall. Describing the race, Oscar stated, “The swim was tough… Then that bike was just a huge pack, so it was always just looking to the front and keeping out of trouble.. That run—it was just all I had. I’m so proud of myself and my team that’s behind me. I just couldn’t thank them enough.” He was happy with his execution, noting, “I’m really happy with it and how I executed it in general to be honest.”
The following day, Oscar stepped up to compete in the exhilarating and highly competitive World Triathlon Junior/U23 Mixed Team Relay, a format emphasising teamwork and speed. Oscar joined forces with teammates Richelle Hill, Tara Sosinski, and Brayden Mercer, combining for a superb bronze medal performance.
It is a wonderful coincidence that his teammate, Tara Sosinski, also attended Ballarat Grammar back in Junior School before moving to Queensland.
Tara commended his effort, noting Oscar “did an amazing job stepping up from the Juniors in the U23 relay and he put me in a great position, which I was really thankful for.”
For Oscar, the experience of competing alongside the senior athletes was an honour. “I look up to these guys every single day so I’m honestly in awe that I get to be in a team with them. So I just really wanted to rise to the occasion.” The team’s collective effort ultimately paid off with the bronze, a fantastic result on home soil.
The entire Ballarat Grammar community offers a massive congratulations to Oscar on these outstanding international results!
